NPPV and DBS Checks: What’s The Difference?
Many people are aware of what DBS checks are and what they entail since they are often required for everyday jobs. Everybody who works closely and frequently with vulnerable adults or children requires a DBS check, for example.

What Exactly Is The NPPV
NNPV stands for Non-Police Personnel Vetting. It’s a process used to vet workers working in the police force that are not specifically police officers. People working as CCTV engineers, admin staff, detectives, evidence technicians, and so on.
The NPPV exists because the police cannot impartially vet their employees the same way they do for DBS checks.
As you can imagine, this process isn’t going to be as lenient as a regular DBS check, and in fact the process is even more strict than an Enhanced DBS check.
What Does The NPPV Check?
We all know that DBS checks search through an applicant’s criminal record and ensure that it meets specific requirements before proceeding, but what does the NPPV check exactly?
As we discussed earlier, the NPPV is more in-depth than an Enhanced check from the DBS. Anyone looking to work in the police force will be thoroughly reviewed.
To apply for an NPPV check, you must also submit information about yourself, your wife, and your children. Here is the required information;
- Names, addresses, and dates of birth for your children, spouse, and yourself
- Your financial history is also required. Court cases for debt and failure to repay loans are checked.
- Information about your friends or spouses who you think might have committed a crime or belong to an extremist group.

The NPPV needs to ensure they are not letting someone get hired who wants to use the increased level of access for criminal activities.
What’s The Difference Between NPPV and DBS Checks?
The NPPV might be similar to the DBS checks in some small ways, but there are more differences than similarities.
As discussed earlier, the NPPV requires far more detailed information about the applicant and even extends it to friends, families, and colleagues. As a result, this leads to a far longer reviewing process than a DBS check. An NPPV check takes a long time before it’s complete, unlike the 2-5 days of DBS check.
Unlike the DBS check certificate with no expiration date, an NPPV check certificate must be reviewed and renewed every 3 years.
