BASIC DBS CHECK
The Basic DBS check is a criminal record check that searches for any unspent convictions and conditional cautions that an applicant could have.
STANDARD DBS CHECK
The Standard DBS Check is only available to employers. This allows an employer to check an applicant’s criminal history for any cautions, warnings, reprimands and convictions. This is only available to employers.
ENHANCED DBS CHECK
The Enhanced DBS check shows the same information as a Standard DBS Check. This additionally includes any relevant information on the applicant held by the police. This check is also only available to employers.

Who should apply for a DBS check?
A DBS check is suitable for contractors, volunteers and anyone who has been asked to provide one, and employers can request checks for their staff with each applicant’s consent. A Basic DBS check can be requested for any role or purpose, while Standard and Enhanced checks are only available for eligible roles. We guide both individuals and organisations through the application process.
How long does a DBS check take?
For Basic DBS checks, an electronic certificate is usually available from the DBS within 24 hours on request, with the paper certificate usually arriving at your address within 1 to 5 days. Processing times can vary depending on identity verification, the accuracy of the application, DBS processing and police processing times. Standard and Enhanced checks usually take longer, as they involve additional checks.
Can I apply for a DBS check myself?
Yes. You can apply for a Basic DBS check yourself using our secure form here. Standard and Enhanced DBS checks are usually requested by an employer or organisation for an eligible role. Since 21 January 2026, self-employed people and personal employees who are paid for their work can also apply for their own Enhanced DBS check, including barred list checks, through us, provided their role is eligible.
What information does my certificate show?
A Basic DBS check usually shows unspent convictions and conditional cautions. A Standard DBS check may show spent and unspent convictions, cautions, reprimands and final warnings. An Enhanced DBS check may show the same information as a Standard check, plus any relevant information held by local police. Information shown on Standard and Enhanced certificates is subject to DBS filtering rules.
Where will my DBS certificate be sent?
Your DBS certificate is posted by the DBS to the current address you provide in your application. For Basic DBS checks, an electronic certificate is also available on request.
How do I verify my identity?
We verify your identity online using Yoti, a certified digital identity provider listed on the UK Government’s register of digital verification services for DBS checks. You’ll need a smartphone to scan your photo ID, such as a passport or driving licence, and take a quick selfie to confirm the document belongs to you. How long is my DBS check valid?
A DBS certificate has no fixed expiry date. It shows the information held at the date it was issued, so many employers ask for a recent certificate, often one issued within the last 12 months. You can apply for a new check at any time.
